Orange above. If you prefer to wake up with a happy jolt, try a bold orange-gold color on the ceiling. An orange ceiling will intensify the blue of the skies outside as blue and orange are complementary colors. With such a strong color on the ceiling, I'd go with light and warm neutrals for the walls and trim.
Hang wall-mounted reading lights close to the sides of the bed or above it (about 6 inches from the edge of the mattress or headboard). Place them at a point that makes sense for the position in which you read: sitting straight up, stretched out on your stomach etc. You want the beam to shine directly on the page, not at an oblique angle. For maximum flexibility, choose articulated reading lights that you can adjust to suit your height and your reading position. Go for a style that focuses light in a narrow beam rather than diffusing it over the surrounding space.
Cozy rustic. Raw, unfinished wood is key to this look, but you don't need to splurge on a big piece to make it work. Use a plain wood slice (find it in a crafts store) as a tray to hold bedside necessities, repurpose a wood stump as a table or bring in a few rustic wooden boxes as bedroom storage. Create warmth with cozy patchwork quilts, wool blankets and faux fur pillows — and if you have a pair of cowboy boots, be sure to leave them out on display.
